Sophie Turner Says She’s One of the Few Happy With GOT Season 8

Sophie Turner’s reflection on Game of Thrones Season 8 offers rare insight into why the finale worked for one character—and failed so many others. Turner has openly admitted she was among the few cast members content with her character’s fate, and her reasoning reveals the deeper storytelling divide at the heart of the show’s ending.

Sansa Stark’s arc was built on endurance, not ambition. Introduced as a romantic idealist, she survived psychological warfare, political imprisonment, and emotional trauma. Over eight seasons, Sansa learned the cost of power by watching it corrupt nearly everyone around her. By the finale, she no longer wanted the Iron Throne—she wanted independence and safety for the North.

Her crowning as Queen in the North felt earned because it aligned with her journey. Turner has pointed to moments like Sansa silencing Edmure Tully as symbolic: Sansa was done with ego-driven men playing games while her people suffered. Her victory wasn’t domination—it was sovereignty.

Unfortunately, that narrative clarity wasn’t shared by other characters. Emilia Clarke has spoken emotionally about receiving Daenerys’ script pages and feeling betrayed by how abruptly her character became a tyrant. Conleth Hill was devastated by Varys’ uncharacteristically careless betrayal. Isaac Hempstead Wright genuinely thought Bran becoming king was a fake script. Kit Harington later admitted the cast was physically and emotionally drained after an 11-month shoot, leaving little room to challenge creative decisions.

Sophie Turner’s contentment underscores the real issue with Season 8: inconsistency. Some characters were guided by long-term storytelling logic, while others were rushed to conclusions that contradicted years of development.

Turner hasn’t ruled out returning as Sansa in a future HBO sequel—but only if the script is strong enough. That condition alone speaks volumes. In a broken finale, Sansa Stark stood as one of the few characters whose ending truly made sense.
